The Strawberry (Fragaria) is a plant in the family Rosaceae. The genus Fragaria includes ca 30 species and a number of hybrids and cultivars. The best known strawberry – the garden strawberry – is a hybrid of the Virginia and Chilean strawberries. Cultivation of strawberries is thought to have begun in the 15th or 16th century. The taste of strawberries depends on its variety. Some are quite sweet; other are tart. Strawberries are rather strong allergens. Two species of this genus are indigenous to Estonia: the wild strawberry and Fragaria viridis.

 

What do strawberries contain?
Strawberries contain 8% carbohydrates, up to 2% proteins and up to 1.5% vitamin C. The nutritional value of 100 gram of strawberries is ca 32 kcal. The berries are also rich in phosphorus, iron, potassium and calcium.

 

What are the benefits of strawberries?
Strawberries are good for the liver and the digestive tract. They can also be used to alleviate cases of kidney and bladder stones, kidney infection and kidney sand. They also alleviate certain cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Strawberries are also recommended to people recovering from serious diseases or surgery, and to overcome vitamin deficiencies.
